Aviva advises insurance brokers to "get closer" to customers

Aviva has told insurance brokers that they need to "get closer" to their customers if they are going to get through the economic downturn.

Janice Deakin, corporate sales director at the company, has pointed out that the better a relationship is between a policyholder and a broker, the more likely it is that a customer will stick with them.

She pointed out that there is a trend at the moment for consumers to switch providers more regularly than before, so the key is for brokers to know their customer better than anyone else.

"In order to mitigate the effects of the recession, brokers must get closer to their customers and understand the challenges they are facing," she said.

Ms Deakin predicted that the downturn will probably increase the number of fraudulent claims made for arson and theft, although she expects there will be more genuine claims too.

The British Insurance Brokers' Association recently commended the move by the Department of Business Innovation and Skills to help with the take-up of cover under the trade credit top-up scheme.
