AA Insurance: Uninsured driving "not a victimless crime"

AA Insurance has called for the industry to find a new formula to deal with the number of young people failing to insure their car.

Simon Douglas, director of the organisation, described the number of claims that young people end up making as "tragic", but he said he feels that those who are driving responsibly were not being recognised.

He noted that all less-experienced drivers are not necessarily reckless, but that the statistics are very much against them and that this translated into higher premiums.

"Uninsured driving is not a victimless crime. Young drivers are ten times more likely to be involved in a collision than more experienced drivers," he said.

Mr Douglas made his comments following the announcement by the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) that one in five young people is driving without insurance.

The MIB also reported that many youths believe that insurance is calculated by how much a car is worth rather than the profile of who is driving it.
