Law-abiding motorists 'are paying for uninsured drivers'

The Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) has reminded road users that accidents which involve drivers without insurance end up being paid for by the law-abiding majority.

It reported that £500 million is used to compensate people each year for injury or vehicle damage that they sustain due to uninsured drivers, which comes out of the money paid by policyholders.

Ashton West, chief executive of MIB, has noted that it is young people that make up a "significant" portion of uninsured drivers, who he felt should consider the consequences of their actions.

He said: "While we recognise the financial pressures for drivers taking to the roads for the first time, it is also a criminal offence to drive without proper insurance cover."

One in ten young drivers does not know that it is illegal to drive without insurance, according to research by the organisation.

Recent research by AA Motor Insurance showed that distractions off the road can be the cause of accidents and 75 per cent of people surveyed find that they take their eyes off the road if there is a nice view outside.
