Motorists downsize to save on car insurance, says uSwitch

Drivers are increasingly looking to downsize their vehicles in order to reduce their expenditure on everything from fuel to insurance, it has been suggested.

According to data from the price comparison and switching site, 33 per cent of potential car buyers intend to purchase a smaller motor this year.

The company noted that this could offer a boost to the sector in the same way that the government's car scrappage scheme did.

Commenting on the news, Mark Monteiro, insurance expert at uSwitch, said that size and fuel efficiency have become "crucial factors" for people when it comes to purchasing a new vehicle.

He added: "Consumers seem to be solely focused on keeping the longer-term running and maintenance costs ... to a minimum."

On August 10th, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills noted that the government's car scrappage scheme had reached its halfway point, which orders having reached 154,927.
