RIAS: 1 in 4 over-50s worried about burglary

RIAS has expressed concern over the anxiety that over-50s feel about being burgled.

Janet Connor, managing director of the organisation, claimed that it was a concern to see the results of its research which indicated that 23 per cent of people in that age group are worried that they could have possessions from their house robbed.

She pointed out that the government has tried to reassure people about the problem of thieves and burglars, but that there are things that can be done.

"By fitting specific locks to windows and doors, consumers will not only benefit from increased security, but may also qualify for extra discounts from their household insurance provider," she explained.

Despite Manchester and Nottingham being the cities where the most burglaries take place, it was in London where people where most worried, with 27 per cent of over-50s saying they had become more afraid of the prospect over the past year.

This week, RIAS's first television advertising campaign began, which highlights real life examples of over-50s doing extraordinary things.
