Aviva warns commercial customers of fire risk

Aviva has advised its business customers to be aware of the threat of arson because fire damage claims are rising.

Allister Smith, property risk manager at the organisation, made his comments following the release of figures by the Association of British Insurers (ABI).

Its report showed that fire damage claims had gone up by 20 per cent in the first half of this year compared to the same time two years ago.

Mr Smith claimed that 40 per cent of the fires that are claimed for at Aviva are started deliberately so businesses need to be wary of the opportunistic nature of arsonists.

He said: "A fire will, at best, be disruptive to a business and, at worst, lead to death of and injury to employees, severe property and business interruption damage."

Last month, Aviva claimed that fraud now costs the UK insurance market around £19 billion a year, according to ABI statistics.
