Direct Line: Home insurance is essential

Direct Line has told consumers that home insurance is still essential, despite seeing a fall in the number of claims being made.

Andrew Lowe, head of the home insurance arm of the organisation, urged people not to ditch their home insurance because of its value when things go wrong.

He pointed out that insurance cover will always give a policyholder peace of mind if they end up having to claim.

"In particular it is important that your contents policy includes enough cover for all of your possessions, especially new or upgraded items," he added.

Mr Lowe explained that the number of claims has fallen this year compared to last year mainly because of the amount of storm damage that occurred in 2008.

This week, the Sainsbury's Home Insurance Index indicated that the number of claims had gone down by 29 per cent in the first six months of 2009 compared to the first half of last year.
