Sheila's Wheels, provider of car insurance products tailored to the needs of female drivers, has outlined some tips on how women can keep themselves safe this autumn.

As the skies of Britain are set to darken earlier over the coming months, Sheila's Wheels has advised female drivers to reduce the risk of them becoming an attractive target for thieves.

Parking in well-lit areas where possible is a good idea, it recommends, as is choosing a space as close to the exit of an indoor car park as possible.

Keeping away from pillars, stairwells and corners - potential hiding places for thieves - could also be a safer choice.

To avoid rummaging through your bag to find your keys - something that may could make women more vulnerable, especially at night - they should aim to keep them in the same place for quick access, says the insurance provider.

"Making sure you act quickly and confidently to get into your car safely is vital," Jenny Fawson, director of personal safety at the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, a foundation dedicated to helping people stay safe on Britain's streets.
