Over-50s contributing 'more than people think'

The over-50s are making more of a contribution to the economy than people think and should in fact be celebrated, according to an industry insider.

Janet Connor, managing director of RIAS, pointed out that stereotypes suggesting that the senior generation are a drag on the country's resources are completely incorrect, because in reality it is completely the opposite.

She highlighted some recent research by the organisation, which showed that over-50s actually made a net fiscal contribution of £6.5 billion to the public purse last year.

"The over-50s are not only earning more than the under-50s, but they are spending more as well which enables them to give back to society," she added.

Ms Connor said that people have to celebrate people in that age group as individuals rather than putting them all in a stereotype, because many of them are still achieving new things even in later life.

The study by RIAS showed that in total 147,000 people have broken a UK, world or Guinness record since turning 50.
