Social lives hit by recession, says moneysupermarket.com

People are not able to go out as much now because of the recession, a trend which may grow in the near future, suggested moneysupermarket.com.

Julie Owens, head of home insurance at the comparison site, pointed out that two-thirds of the population are staying in more in the current economic climate, according to figures released by the organisation.

She claimed that this likely to continue through the autumn and winter because of the climate in those months, but noted that dinner parties are now on the rise.

"It's no surprise we're a nation of belt-tighteners at the moment, but the research reveals our social lives have been hit hard by the recession," said Ms Owens.

Research by moneysupermarket.com showed that 11 per cent of people have resorted to holding dinner parties and barbeques rather than going out.

People borrowed double in the second quarter of 2009 as they did in the first quarter of the year, which a spokesperson for Unbiased.co.uk noted could mean people are heading down the "debt path" for day to day spending.
