AA Insurance 'in favour of fines for uninsured drivers'

AA Insurance has welcomed proposals to fine drivers who are caught with vehicles that are not protected by sufficient cover.

In the landmark move, owners in possession of cars that have been stationary for some time will also be eligible for the fine, unless they have sent a Statutory Off-Road Notification to the DVLA beforehand.

If the plans are implemented, those caught driving without insurance will be issued fines of £100 which will drop to £50 if they pay promptly.

Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, said that it is "unacceptable" for legitimate drivers to pay for the negligence of others.

He added, "they run the risk of being stopped by police using automatic number plate recognition equipment. If they can't prove that they are insured, their car will be confiscated."

Last month, the AA stated that driving without insurance "is not a victimless crime".
