Direct Line car insurance: Fines too small for uninsured motorists

Direct Line car insurance has said that a suggestion to issue fines to uninsured motorists is not enough incentive to deter them from driving without cover.

According to the car insurance provider, the Government's proposed Continuous Enforcement programme would see motorists being fined as little as £50 if the plans are approved - a sum the company says is less than that charged when people are found over-filling their bins.

The company pointed out that the proposals include an automatic £100 fine that can be halved if the culprit pays promptly.

Andy Goldby, director of motor underwriting at Direct Line, commented: "While we welcome this initiative, with uninsured drivers costing British society around £500 million each year, the severity of penalties must act as a deterrent to those considering driving without insurance."

According to figures from the Department for Transport, around five per cent of cars in Britain are not covered by valid insurance policies.
