Students make vital contribution to the economy, says Santander

Santander has said that students make pivotal impact on the economy through the quantity of work experience they do.

Research by the bank indicated that the number of hours of work experience that students carry out is worth more than £260 million to the economy in the UK.

Gillian Almond, head of current accounts at Abbey, one of Santander's UK brands, told students they will need to be financially savvy to be able to carry out this worthwhile hands-on experience free of charge.

The average number of days of voluntary work done over the summer was 17 and Ms Almond suggested that it will have been tough to juggle this with the paying jobs that give them money for day-to-day living.

She said: "It is important for today's students to be able to demonstrate that they have gained experience outside of mainstream education."

Abbey is currently doing a prize draw throughout September where it is giving away £50 every hour to raise people's awareness of its student account.
