Will Thomas, head of motor insurance at the comparison site, made his comments following the release of figures by the Motor Insurance Bureau (MIB) which indicated that an uninsured driver kills three people every week.
He warned motorists that one day they could be in an accident with an uninsured driver and that they will then appreciate how difficult it is to get compensation in the situation.
Mr Thomas said: "Making sure uninsured driving doesn't happen is everyone's responsibility. No matter how safe a driver you are, you cannot rely on the same from other people."
In comparison, he pointed out how much higher fines are for "lesser" crimes, such as failing to buy a television licence and graffiti, in which the charges can be £1,000 and £5,000 respectively.
The MIB recently reported that only seven per cent of motorists know the consequences of driving without insurance.
