Winter cash boost for elderly will bring "relief"

Age Concern and Help the Aged has commented that higher-rate cold weather payments for the elderly will be a "relief", but called for more to be done.

Patrick South, head of public affairs at the charity, pointed out that the move is a good short-term decision, but that there needs to be greater focus on ensuring that older people are offered lower energy tariffs.

He highlighted the need for energy-efficiency goals to be altered so that those living in "fuel poverty" are helped.

However, Mr South was still pleased that the upper rate of £25 in cold weather payments would be handed out to older people this winter.

"This extra money will bring some relief to older people who are worried about how they will pay their fuel bills if we have another cold winter," he said.

Age Concern and Help the Aged formed into one charity in April this year.
