Cycle theft in Cambridge "happens often"

Students must take care of their bicycles when they go to Cambridge University as thefts "happen often", according to the institution's student union.

Welfare officer at the organisation Amiya Bhatia pointed out that the city is full of cyclists so bikes can be prone to being stolen, but she noted that there are a number of things that people can do to protect their bicycle.

She stated that those bikes which are badly locked are more likely to be stolen and students can register them with the National Property Register so that there is more chance of it being recovered if a thief does strike.

Ms Bhatia said: "Thousands of students use bicycles to get around Cambridge and cycle theft does happen often. A particular period of activity is the fortnight surrounding Freshers' Week."

In her opinion, there are a number of good systems in place to prevent thievery occurring but it is also down to students to look after their belongings.

The Cambridge University Student Union represents 18,000 people from the colleges affiliated with the institution.
