State pension age 'may need regular reviews'

The Pensions Policy Institute has advised that the government may need to carry out regular reviews of the state retirement age in relation to life expectancy.

Director of the organisation Niki Cleal made her comments following the announcement by the shadow chancellor George Osborne that the Conservative Party would push back the state pension age for men to 66 by 2016.

Ms Cleal pointed out that in the future periodic reviews could be useful in determining at what age people should begin receiving their state pension.

She explained: "Reviews would need to balance the latest evidence with the need to give people enough notice of any proposed increases to the State Pension Age to enable them to plan for their retirement."

Another factor that will need to be investigated is the effect that pension policy changes will have on women.

This week, Aviva proposed several new policies regarding pensions, including greater access to savings before a customer actually retires.
