Economic recovery 'must keep green principles in mind'

The recession has meant less greenhouse gases have been emitted due to lower industrial output, which means that an economic recovery could see these emissions increase again, says an industry insider.

John Barwise, chair of the Cumbria Green Business Forum, made his remarks following research by the International Energy Agency (IEA), which indicated that CO2 emissions could fall by up to three per cent in 2009.

Mr Barwise commented that this is a clear consequence of the economic downturn, so the challenge ahead is to keep the emissions down while ensuring that the markets improve.

He added: "Politicians and financial institutions alike should be reminded that while the markets have cooled down, the planet is still heating up at an alarming rate."

The report by the IEA stated that the current level of emissions has created the opportunity to stabilise greenhouse gases if the right actions are taken and the global temperature increases by only 2 degrees C.
