Steve Sweeney, head of motor insurance at moneysupermarket.com, made his comments as the price comparison site published research indicating that drivers in Bromley and Cleveland are most likely to claim on their vehicle insurance.
It was found that Chislehurst and Wingate - which are situated in the former and latter, respectively - are most likely to make claims due to theft.
Mr Sweeney said: "For those living in areas with a higher risk of theft of, or from their vehicle it is even more important to shop around and look for the best deals available for your car insurance."
He also advised drivers to be aware of ways to reduce premiums, such as keeping cars in driveways or garages, adding a partner to a policy and increasing voluntary excess if possible.
Earlier this month, moneysupermarket.com published research indicating that more than a million drivers would think about staging a road accident so they could make a car insurance claim.
