Confused.com says unemployment can increase insurance premium

Confused.com has informed consumers that they should not be surprised if they find their home insurance premium goes up because there are more people in the house who cannot find work.

Darren Black, head of home insurance at the comparison site, made his comments following the news that unemployment in the UK has now reached 2.47 million.

He pointed out that having more people around the house could mean there is more chance of an accident occurring and this is how insurance providers will see the situation.

However, Mr Black stressed that this should not put people off paying their premiums.

"Taking a chance and leaving your home uninsured is very dangerous for those already strapped for cash as a result of being out of work," he explained.

Last week, Confused.com advised customers that should prepare for energy prices to rise, after Ofgem published a report which indicated that utility bills will increase by between 14 and 60 per cent by 2015.
