'Caution is vital' for security against fraud

People have been informed that the best way to avoid being a victim of fraud is to be cautious about where they share their personal details.

Identity fraud expert James Webb has advised consumers to be wary about whom they carry out transactions with online, since personal information is often shared during purchases.

He also recommended keeping confidential documents as secure as possible and ensure that they are cross-cut shredded when thrown away.

Mr Webb explained: "If somebody gets hold of your address, they can start to build up a profile of you and then can use that, potentially, to steal your identity."

It is also a good idea to be aware of which details a person is sharing on social networking sites, since this is a potential risk, he added.

This week, Fellowes and the National Fraud Authority announced that 36 per cent of Britons shred documents containing sensitive information.
