Friends Provident: Brits cut back with nights in

A total of 22 per cent of Brits are cutting back on potentially costly nights out by spending their evenings socialising at home, according to new research.

The study, carried out by Friends Provident, indicated that along with an increase in the number of people staying indoors during the recession, many are also turning to free online sites - including Facebook and MySpace - to keep in touch with friends.

"It is encouraging to see that consumers are reining in their spending habits and saving money where possible in the current climate," said Friends Provident's head of corporate pensions marketing Martin Palmer.

He added that it is "interesting to see" the recent shift in social interaction, as well as people's willingness to embrace new technologies.

The research also found that more people are turning to online dating sites during the economic downturn to save money and avoid wasting their time.

Another way to save money was recently suggested by insurer RSA, which explained that people could be missing out on savings by forgetting to change the timers on their heaters when the clocks go back.
