RSA: Check appliances to save on heating bills

Home insurer RSA has advised people to check the timers on equipment such as heaters to avoid getting stung with a potentially costly electricity bill.

As the clocks went back this weekend, many people may have forgotten to change the timers on these appliances - which could lead to wasted energy.

RSA's UK head of corporate responsibility Dr Paul Pritchard asserted that many people "simply forget" about timers with the end of British Summer Time and could cause more energy to be used than is necessary.

Businesses should also take care to check timers, according to the insurer's corporate responsibility team, which estimated that firms pay up to five per cent extra on their electricity bills for energy they do not use.

Home insurer More Than recently pointed out that the end of longer summer days may offer potential burglars extra cover of darkness.

It advised people to ensure their front and back doors are always secured and to ensure they are covered by a comprehensive home contents insurance policy.
