Egg: Parents shell out £200m on Halloween

Mums and dads across the UK are expected to spend a collective £200 million celebrating Halloween this year, according to credit card provider Egg.

Spokesperson Vanessa Wood noted that as the holiday increases in popularity in the UK, some parents experience "a big hit on the purse strings".

The firm estimated that each British family now spends a total of £15.12 on Halloween candies, parties, presents and costumes.

Ms Wood added that as another major holiday for children - Christmas - is fast approaching, parents should consider getting "creative" with their spending.

One way to do this is by choosing a credit card with a cashback scheme or loyalty programme in the lead-up to the winter holidays - rewards which could be redeemed just in time for the festive season.

Home insurer Axa also offered some useful Halloween advice recently.

It suggested that homeowners should take particular care in the week between Halloween and Bonfire Night to ensure their property stays safe - such as by locking garden gates, windows and doors.
