Home insurance cover 'invalidated by social network invitations'

Posting party invitations on websites like Facebook and MySpace can invalidate your home insurance claims if there is any damage, reports Sainsbury's Finance.

Sainsbury's Home Insurance searched 100 parties in the UK advertised on Facebook and found 50 per cent of them openly advertised the time and location.

Ben Tyte, Sainsbury's Home Insurance manager, said that there is real concern about how people are willing to post party details on a website that anyone can see.

"Halloween parties, with many guests wearing masks and fancy dress, can leave homeowners particularly vulnerable to gatecrashers," he added.

While Sainsbury's Homes Insurance Claims Index found that overall household insurance claims have dropped by over 150,000 for the first half of this year compared the same period in 2008, claims for parties have accounted for a third of claims in the last five years.

These claims resulted in £16.8 million in damages each year, with 17,000 payouts being for between £1,000 and £5,000 worth of damage.
