'Growth in confidence' for online shopping

Consumer confidence in shopping over the internet is growing, according to an online retail expert.

David Smith, director of operations for e-retail business developer IMRG, believes confidence in using the technology, combined with safer payment options like CardSecure, have helped to build trust.

Customer behaviour is changing as many are now using the internet to inform their decisions before making purchases, which is helping offline businesses, he added.

A trend had been found for companies with an online presence of shoppers finding products on the website and going in-store to look at them, before buying them online or on the high street, Mr Smith said.

This month's British Retain Consortium Consumer Confidence Index reported that while worries over debt have increased to 15 per cent, overall people are beginning to feel more secure in their employment prospects and finances.

Consumers have also noted inflation is decreasing and concerns over the cost of food and utility bills are easing.
