ID fraud risk increases during postal strike, says CreditExpert

Fraudsters could use the postal strike to steal or redirect mail, CreditExpert has warned.

The website, which is the ID fraud protection service from Experian, warned consumers to be vigilant about missing mail during the strike period, as misplaced bank statements can be a sign of account takeover.

Instances of victims of this type of fraud contacting Experian for advice increased by 206 per cent in the first nine months of this year.

Earlier this year, the company found that the group most at risk for ID theft were young singles in shared rented accommodation. Residents of London and St Albans are the most at risk.

Darryl Bowman from CreditExpert said while it is easy to assume that mislaid post is due to the backlog, it is important to investigate and report missing items.

He urged people to check that credit card bills arrive on time, as "if your account has been taken over then the bill will probably stop coming as the fraudster will have changed your address on the account."

Further walk-outs are planned on November 6th and 9th as the dispute between the Royal Mail and the Communication Workers Union continues.
