Concerns over eye care costs 'putting sight at risk'

Worries over the cost of eyecare are stopping 75 per cent of people from having essential sight tests, according to Simplyhealth.

Eye examinations every two years can detect a range of problems, including diabetes, high blood pressure and tumours.

Through the NHS, 30 million people, including everyone in Scotland, is entitled to some form of free visual care, either as tests or in glasses vouchers.

The survey, carried out by the private health firm and charity the Eyecare Trust, marks National Eye Week, which is taking place from November 9th to 15th.

Simplyhealth's cash plan gives money back on eye tests and glasses purchases up to an annual limit.

Raman Sankaran of Simplyhealth said the company believes cost should not be a barrier to good eye health.

"A cash plan can help take away the financial bother of visiting the optician, allowing you peace of mind to attend your regular eye examinations," he added.

In September, Simplyhealth found that 27 per cent of Brits wish they had taken better care of their health in the past.
