Learner drivers turning to parents for lessons, says uSwitch

Young motorists are getting driving lessons from their parents in a bid to save money, according to a survey by uSwitch.

More than one in ten (12 per cent) of people learning to drive are being taught solely by amateur instructors.

However, 17 per cent who learned with family or friends later admitted it was a bad experience.

The price comparison site warns prospective tutors to verify they have adequate insurance to give lessons to a loved one first, after seven per cent of novices said they were sure the policy had not been checked before they got behind the wheel.

To ensure that any accidents caused by the trainee driver are covered, they must be named on the insurance policy.

Mark Monterio, insurance expert at uSwitch, said some parents are putting their names down on the insurance policy of cars owned by their children. However, this could lead to insurers refusing to pay out and the young driver being banned and earning six penalty points on their licence.

The average age of a child on their parents' insurance rose to 31, uSwitch found last month, an increase from 25 years old in 2008.
