People are not saving, says the Motley Fool

Consumers have fallen out of the habit of making regular savings, according to one industry expert.

David Kuo, director at the Motley Fool, made his remarks after Santander published figures indicating that 28 per cent of families have no investments or savings and 20 per cent of parents have less than £1,000 to fall back on when times are tough.

He stated that many people believe that their jobs are secure and, as such, feel that they will not need to draw on their savings at some point in the future.

Mr Kuo said that lots of consumers feel that they will be able to rely on interest rates to boost their savings, but that we are currently in a low-interest environment - with the Bank of England base rate standing at 0.5 per cent.

"We are going to be getting very low interest rates for a quite some time which means that you cannot rely on interest rates and loans to boost your savings pot," he concluded.
