"No reason" why online shopping should not be done in confidence

There is "no reason" why consumers should not be spending money online with total confidence, according to one sector expert.

Katy Worobec, head of fraud control for the UK Cards Association, made her remarks as the UK Payments Association published figures showing that web-based shoppers are due to spend 15 per cent more online this December than they did during the same month in 2008.

The organisation welcomed news that more than 53 million debit and credit cards have now been registered with online payment systems including Verified by Visa and MasterCard SecureCode.

It also expressed pleasure at the fact that more web retailers are making use of the systems.

Ms Worobec said: "More of us than ever before will be doing our Christmas shopping online this year - and there is absolutely no reason why we shouldn't be doing so in complete confidence."

Earlier this month, PayPal noted that only one in seven people check to ensure they are making online purchases from a trusted website or brand as one of their priorities.
