Sainsbury's: Remember to insure pets

Taking out pet insurance on pedigree dogs can save cash for animal owners should they need to pay costly medical bills, Sainsbury's has stated.

Sainsbury's Pet Insurance issued the reminder after it received a 45 per cent rise in the number of claims made for pedigree pooches in the first half of 2009.

Taking out insurance with the provider means vets bills up to £7,500 are covered, as well as up to £1,000 of emergency kennel fees, should anything go wrong.

Lucy Hunter, manager at Sainsbury's Pet Insurance, said that hereditary conditions which can affect pure-breed canines, such as chronic skin and hip problems found in West Highland Terriers, means that the cost of vet fees can run high, meaning adequate cover is more important.

In related news, Saga Pet Insurance found that on Bonfire Night, 60 per cent of caring dog and cat owners were planning to stay in with their animals, rather than go out to watch a display.
