"Thousands" making the most of stamp duty holiday

Many customers are trying to make the most of the stamp duty holiday before it ends, according to moneysupermarket.com.

Hannah-Mercedes Skenfield, mortgages channel manager at the price comparison site, made her comments as the online resource published figures indicating that the number of people looking to buy a house for less than £175,000 has risen over the last quarter.

A rise of nine per cent in searches for mortgages for properties under £175,000 on the site was recorded over the three-month period.

Ms Skenfield stated: "Thousands of house buyers are trying to take advantage of the stamp duty holiday before it is due to end. It is encouraging to see an increase in homeowners looking for this band of property."

Earlier this month, moneysupermarket.com suggested that people should make saving more money their new year's resolution for 2010.
