Brits still spending on UK food 'despite recession'

British consumers are still keen to spend money on purchasing food from their own country, despite the ongoing effects of the global economic downturn, it has been asserted.

Alexia Robinson, founder of Love British Food, said that 2009 has had one "great contradiction" and this has been the "clamour" to purchase food that has been produced in Britain in spite of the financial climate.

She said that even though food that has been produced in Britain is sometimes considered to be more expensive, people are keen to buy it because it represents good value for money.

"They want value for money, but value, in the case of food, has never been just about price; it is about taste, freshness and quality," Ms Robinson concluded.

She made her comments after the recent publication of research by mySupermarket.co.uk, which showed that all supermarket prices have risen by an average of three per cent since 2008.
