Shoppers 'go online to avoid fuel costs'

Consumers are going online to buy presents this year to avoid the costs associated with driving, according to uSwitch.com.

Collectively, with the 15 per cent fuel prices increases that have been seen since last November, shoppers are paying £78 million a year more for driving. On top of this, the average car park fee for a two to four-hour stay is £8.68.

The research found that 72 per cent of people believe that it is easier to stick to a budget when shopping online. In addition, 19 per cent of consumers have increased how much shopping they do over the net since the start of the recession.

Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com said: "With broadband as cheap as £5.99 a month it's easy to see why we as consumers have wholeheartedly embraced online shopping."

In September, the website said it was unhappy with the announcement that a 50p tax was being considered for everyone with a fixed telephone line, to help cover the cost of high-speed broadband.
