Homes need better protection against thieves, say esure

Homeowners need to ensure they are taking adequate steps to protect their homes from thieves, according to esure.

The insurance provider found that seven per cent of break-ins were down to a robber entering a property through the front door using a key that had been poorly hidden.

In addition, 64 per cent of respondents admitted to having left windows open when nobody is at home, with a further 42 per cent confessing to leaving the back door unlocked when they have gone out.

Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure home insurance, said it is vital that homeowner make sure that their property is as secure as possible, as if they cannot prove to their insurer they took all the necessary steps to make it safe, they may not have a claim paid out.

Earlier in the year, the company advised homeowners to remember to make sure the possessions they keep outdoors are secure, from gardening equipment and furniture, to items in storage in outbuildings and garages.
