HMRC offers advice to flood victims

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is to offer practical advice for people affected by the floods that have hit the country in recent weeks.

By establishing a special helpline, HMRC aims to help people on an individual basis and may offer a revised payment schedule to those who cannot pay their bills due to flood-related financial difficulties.

In addition, there may be scope for practical arrangements for taxpayers and businesses who find difficulty in paying their debts because financial documentation has been lost in the floods.

Furthermore, penalties will be reviewed and additional surcharges will not be applied to victims of the severe weather.

Commenting on the initiative, financial secretary Stephen Timms, said: "We want people to be able to concentrate on recovering from the recent events.

"A quick call to the HMRC helpline will give peace of mind, enabling customers to focus on restoring their homes and businesses."

HMRC announced last week that it is to give taxpayers with offshore investments a more time to come forward under the New Disclosure Opportunity.
