Customers 'waiting to commit to Christmas spending'

Consumers are delaying when it comes to committing to spending cash in the run-up to Christmas, one industry expert has asserted.

Pierre Williams, head of research at MoneyExpert.com, stated that people are waiting to see what special offers will be unveiled by shops ahead of December 25th.

He explained that all signs point to a "price war" on the part of supermarkets, which could mean that people are able to make big savings.

This may be particularly significant when one takes the current financial climate into consideration.

"Retailers must be nervous. There's unlikely to be the kind of Christmas credit card splurge we've seen in recent years," Mr Williams concluded.

The sector analyst made his remarks after the publication of the latest GfK NOP Consumer Confidence Index, which dropped by four points.

It now stands at minus 17, which is 18 points higher than the score was at this time in 2008.
