Make the most of retirement, Aviva urges

Aviva has urged older consumers to make the most of their retirement and have a great time after they have finished full-time work.

The financial services provider made its assertions as it published figures which indicate that only 41 per cent of children expect to receive an inheritance.

Research by the organisation indicated that people living in Northern Ireland are least likely to receive something in a will, while those living in the south-east are the most likely to inherit.

Director of UK life pensions at Aviva Brian Bussell said: "Based on this research, we would urge the UK's older generation to heed the call from their families and make the most of their retirement."

He said that this may take the form of investing in a good-value annuity or unlocking money tied up in property through equity release.

Recent research by Aviva showed that 35 per cent of people think that their retirement funds have been lowered by the recession.
