Abbey: Winter sports at most expensive level in a decade

The cost of winter sports is at its highest level since the turn of the millennium, according to research by Abbey.

On average a holiday, with a package of flights and accommodation, will cost £686 per adult.

In order to save cash, some winter sports fans may be tempted to go instead to less well-known resorts to get more for their money.

Heading to countries that do not use the euro, such as Bulgaria and Slovenia, can provide holidaymakers with good skiing conditions, at a lower price than the popular European destinations.

Emma Roberts, director at Santander Cards, said that another way that skiers can save money is to make sure they use a credit card that does not charge them an additional fee for every transaction they make aboard.

In October, the bank found that parents wanting to take a break away during the school holidays will pay 104 per cent more for the holiday than they would the week later.
