Broadband dongles 'popular choice this Christmas'

Broadband dongles are proving to be a popular and cost effective gift idea this Christmas, Consumer Choices has reported.

Dongles, which allow computer users to pick up the internet, have become increasingly popular since 2007 and around a quarter of a million of the devices are sold in the UK each month.

Before purchasing a dongle as a gift, Broadband.co.uk recommended shoppers check the coverage of the service in their area and comparing costs of the devices themselves, as they can vary between manufacturers.

Michael Phillips, product director at Broadbandchoices.co.uk, said as there are no contracts needed with many broadband dongles, they make good gifts for students or those who travel frequently.

"Most importantly, by ditching line rental in favour of a dongle, consumers can save over £100 per year," he added.

In October, the consumer advice website suggested that smaller broadband providers are offering more competitive deals in a bid to compete with the larger providers.
