M&S: Check household security at Christmas

Homeowners should ensure their home is properly secured during the festive season, according to Marks & Spencer (M&S).

As domestic burglaries increase over the winter months, it is essential that homes are secured to protect expensive new items from theft.

Some 39 per cent of those surveyed admitted that they keep their Christmas gifts under the tree in the run-up to the big day, with just seven per cent having home security in mind and hiding them until Christmas morning.

David Wells, M&S head of insurance, said practical measures can help householders to keep their belongings safe, advising people to keep presents out of view, using timers for lights and radios to make it appear someone is home and keeping curtains closed in the evening.

As many people may be expecting to receive a new bike this year, keeping cycles safe should be a priority, as M&S found earlier in the year that bike thefts have increased by 22 per cent in the last year.
