Save money this Christmas 'by making your own gifts'

Making your own gifts this year could save you money on the cost of Christmas, according to the Principality Building Society.

In a survey of its customers it found that 54 per cent said they would give something they had handmade, such as a piece of art or knitted clothing, as a gift.

An additional 50 per cent thought that the gift of cake or chocolates they had made themselves would be ideal for someone they knew.

However, 29 per cent said they would consider giving an unwanted gift on to someone else if they thought the person receiving the present would not notice.

James Wright, marketing director at Principality Building Society, said: "Christmas is traditionally a time for giving, but it doesn't have to cost the earth - presents of homemade cakes and chocolates are a lot more personal than socks or aftershave."

For anyone looking to save some cash, the building society offers a two-year bond with a guaranteed rate of 4.25 per cent AER.
