Holidaymakers advised to check credit card charges

Those who are travelling about this festive season for some winter sun or a skiing trip should check their charges on their credit cards before they leave, according to moneysupermarket.com.

Different card providers can charge a wide range of rates on their products, which can leave some tourists out of pocket if they are charged every time they use their card.

Prepaid plastic is becoming popular as holidaymakers can top the product up before they leave for their vacation. They are used in the same way as a regular debit or credit card, but do not incur charges.

Peter Harrison, travel money expert as moneysupermarket.com, said: "It can be costly for consumers to use their current accounts or credit cards abroad, so they should check the terms and conditions with their provider before travelling."

For those staying at home this holiday period, the website advised making purchases on a cashback credit card and researching the cost of items online before going shopping to find the best deals.
