Consumers 'shun sending Christmas cards'

Fewer consumers are sending Christmas cards this year, with many preferring high-tech methods of spreading festive cheer to loved ones this holiday period.

Research by moneysupermarket.com has uncovered the fact that up to 29 per cent of shopper are opting to send a text message, use a social networking website, or a free internet phone service to send out their Christmas wishes.

Julie Owens, spokesperson for mobiles and broadband at moneysupermarket.com, said that while Christmas cards are still a popular way to get in touch with loved ones, more modern methods are starting to give them some competition.

"Sending a text or using a social media site is quick, easy and free and our research shows Skype has clearly become a popular way of keeping in touch, especially for those with family and friends around the world."

It was recently found by the price comparison site that the average British adult now spends the equivalent of three days a month on the internet.
