Confused.com gives its verdict on broadband tax

Following the announcement in the pre-Budget report that a broadband tax is to be levied on households in the UK, Confused.com has offered its opinion.

Gareth Kloet, head of utilities at the financial advice site, said that the tax is a tiny price to pay for upgrading the service.

Expanding the internet's capabilities by making it faster and accessible to more people is a priority – and, in order to achieve this, there needs to be extra funding.

On mainland Europe, broadband speeds are much faster than in the UK and getting the service updated is important as the internet is such an integral part of everyday life.

Mr Kloet added: "Increasing landline costs by 50p a month should be more than manageable especially for those that shop around or opt to bundle their home phone, broadband and digital TV."

He concluded that, as the cost of broadband has fallen in recent years, it should be more affordable to pay the newly proposed tax.

As many people may be considering buying pre-paid broadband dongles this Christmas, Broadbandchoices.co.uk advised consumers to check that their area has good coverage before they invest.
