Homeowners who are planning on going away this holiday season should make sure that they turn off their stop-cock, but keep the central heating on, as this will prevent damage should the pipes burst.
Estimates from the insurance provider suggest that burst pipes and the resulting water damage can lead to claims of up to £60,000.
Those who have suffered from burst pipes in the home while on holiday often come home to find that ceiling has collapsed, resulting in further damage to properties.
Gordon Hannah, director of claims at esure, said: "Many people think that they can't turn the stop-cock off and leave the heating on but usually this is fine to do and it will completely prevent the source of water that can wreck a house."
Keeping properties protected from thieves is also important, as esure that found seven per cent of homes that had been burgled where broken into as the result of a thief entering using a hidden house key.
