Energy prices assessed by uSwitch.com

The new payment plan introduced by npower has been welcomed by uSwitch.com, as it is thought it may begin a price war between the biggest energy providers.

With the announcement of its new online tariff, npower is now charging as little as £907 a year for its energy, which undercuts the British Gas Websaver 5 - which was only introduced last week - by £22.

Overall, an online account can see savings on a standard plan, with the average online option costing £943 a year, compared to the £1,239 of a regular tariff.

Will Marples, energy expert at uSwitch.com, said: "It is good to see suppliers continuing to offer new competitive online tariffs, providing customers with more choice and better savings - particularly in the run-up to Christmas."

Earlier this month, the financial advice site warned consumers that the estimated £4.30 price annual increase on energy bills could mean large electricity price rises in years to come.
