M&S: Keep pets safe this Christmas

Pets are at risk from household items that could cause them to become ill this Christmas, according to M&S pet insurance.

Items that are associated with the festive season could damage the health of animals and led to vets bills in the new year.

Giving turkey meat to cats and dogs can pose a risk to their health as bones can become stuck in their throats and intestines.

The sap from poinsettias can be an irritant and cause stomach upsets in pets that consume it. Mistletoe berries should be removed, as they can also cause stomach upsets and increased heart rates in little four-legged friends.

David Wells, M&S head of insurance, said: "Christmas is a wonderful time of the year for all the family, but the festive period also brings hidden dangers for family pets."

M&S pet insurance found earlier in the year that British animal owners spend up to £1.7 billion a year on premium pet foods to help keep their furry friends healthy.
