Consumers owed '£147m on gas bills'

Bill payers are owed an average combined total of £147 million on their gas charges, according to moneysupermaket.com.

Over five million households in the UK are in credit with their gas supplier, with the average sum coming in at £89 per person, and the total overall being £454 million. It is estimated that 80 per cent of consumers owed money by their suppliers have not asked for it back.

However, there are an additional 1.8 million homes that owe their supplier money, with the average amount of £151 bringing their debt up to £280 million.

Scott Byrom, utilities manager at moneysupermarket.com, said: "Those in debt will not be able to change their supplier until the money is paid back, thereby limiting their chances of finding the best deal available to them."

The announcement of the Sign Online 17 tariff from npower, which has an annual average combined gas and electricity bill of £907, was praised by moneysupermarket.com.
